Information About Alicante & the History of Alicante in a Nutshell

Alicante castle sits high above the cityAlicante is a fantastic city with much history which is built around a natural harbour. Alicante, the capital of the Costa Blanca, has a wonderful marina and is a popular beach resort. If you are looking for a lively city which blends both the old with the new then the cosmopolitan city of Alicante is worth a visit.

With a historical background that stretches over 3000 years there are bound to be amazing historical finds, artefacts, and architecture. The Castillo de Santa Barbara is the castle that dominates Alicante from high on a cliff above the sea where it offers visitors fantastic views of the city. Alicante also has a picturesque old quarter alongside modern shop packed avenues.

For over 150 years visitors have been favouring Alicante as a destination. Alicante boasts a number of beautiful beaches, like the beaches near our apartment in guardamar they have fine, golden sands with high standards of cleanliness and service. They can get very busy however, especially in the summer months.

If you would like to take a break from the sightseeing or want to meet friends for a drink and a bite to eat, why not visit the Explanada de Espańa. You will find cafés, bars, taverns, pizzerias, burger bars, restaurants, chocolaterias and heladarias.

Behind the Explanada, stretching away into Alicante's southern half you will find an area which is called 'La Zona'. It is where you will find the nightlife; cafés, pubs, beer gardens and nightclubs attract many young people and they all combine to create a lively atmosphere. Don't be surprised to see fashionable nightspots packed with teenagers and other places for uninhibited adults; this is all part of the diversity offered here.

The 'Ruta de la Madera' is an area which is also renowned for it's hectic nightlife, it is so called because wood is used in abundance to decorate it's pubs and disco bars.

'El Barrio' is the largest and most popular area of Alicante and is suitable for everybody, whatever their age, beliefs or convictions. It is situated close to the Cathedral of St. Nicholas of Bari and has a wonderful lively atmosphere at night. Here you will find a huge number of bars catering for a diversity of tastes which frequently offer live music or art exhibitions.

The port and marina is a must if you want to see the more modern and cosmopolitan side of Alicante. There are exclusive restaurants, pubs and cafés all of which alternate with shops which have a nautical flavour.

On the side of the Marina is Panoramis a shopping and leisure centre with a number of bars and restaurants, alongside a Warner cinema. This region of Alicante also offers fantastic views with artistic and musical shows taking place during the summer months.

When you stay at the Sunrise Apartment in Guardamar del Segura you can take a bus to Alicante and make the most of all it has to offer if you don't wish to drive.
